Austin Butler has shared how he transformed himself into the King of Rock and Roll for the Elvis Presley biopic.
He even opened up about the moment he was taken to hospital as his ‘body started shutting down’ one day after filming.
Speaking to Jeremy Parsons and Janina Rubenstein from PEOPLE, the actor revealed that playing the singer also came a few downsides.
“I had a week of downtime, where I actually ended up in the hospital,” Butler recalled.
“I didn’t get sick the entire time I filmed (Elvis) but the day I finished, I ended up in the emergency room. So I spent a week in bed and then I went to this other job.”
He also revealed how he lost his voice while performing Elvis’ version of ‘Never Been to Spain.’
“We did so many takes. And at a certain point, I just lost my voice,” he said.
“So then I went on vocal rest for a couple days, and I was able to come back.”
Butler previously spoke about his health issues during an interview with GQ Magazine.
He revealed that his body ‘revolted’ from the excessive preparation. “My body just started shutting down the day after I finished Elvis,” he said.
After the filming, he said that he woke up early in the morning with agonizing pain.
“And I was rushed to hospital.”
According to the news outlet, the actor was diagnosed with ‘a virus that simulates appendicitis and spent a week bedridden.’
Even though he had health issues, Butler described the portrayal of Elvis as ‘the greatest ride of (his) life.’
He scooped the award for the Best Actor at the BAFTAS on February 19 and also won Best Actor in a Drama for his impressive performance as Elvis at the Golden Globe Awards.
