A bride and groom sparked a fiery debate after revealing they were slammed by their friends and relatives after revealing they will offer nothing but water to their wedding guests.
As the young couple revealed in their Reddit post, they always wanted to have a “dry” wedding with water being the only option for their guests to choose from.
And so, they decided to save a small fortune by excluding all drinks except filtered water from their catering package.
“We rarely, if ever, drink soda so most of the time it’s only water with the occasional juice and milk. We don’t even drink coffee,” the woman explained.
“I didn’t think this would be a problem! It’s only water. I mean, don’t most people drink water everyday anyway? Should we pay the extra to have soda to make the family happy?” she added.
As it happens, the cheapskates’ proposal for a water-only wedding was not only slammed by their relatives and friends but also by the majority of readers on Reddit who branded the couple as cheap and selfish.
“I fully support a dry wedding but only water as a beverage is being a cheap host,” someone said.
“Half the guests will be in the parking lot during the reception, drinking cans of soda and juice, etc out of the trunk of someone’s car and leave after dinner,” another wrote.
A third said: “I know that technically you could be in the right, but here’s the thing about weddings, the marriage ceremony is for you and your fiancé. The wedding is for everyone you’ve invited, it’s an event you’re hosting, and not providing any drinks other than water makes you a bad host/hostess.”
Another joked: “Seriously people will be passing around plastic water bottles filled with liquor like its high school all over again.”
Trying to discourage the couple from pushing through with their plans, some people went on to share their own stories from water-only weddings they attended in the past.
“My parents still talk about my dad’s cousin’s wedding where it was like 100 degrees, outside, and they only had a little thing of lemon water for everyone,” one netizen shared.
“My parents bailed on the wedding, got take out and went home to get in the pool. Rest of the family showed up a little while later and said they made the right call.”
