After taking the injured dog in, the rescuers came up with a heartbreaking Facebook post in which they pleaded with the people to donate in order to help them provide the pooch with thorough treatment.

“BROKEN & FORGOTTEN. There he sat. Hit by a car, dragged in by a catch pole, and thrown into a concrete cell only to wait until the rest of the kennels fill up before he’s killed and put out of his misery,” Dallas Dog Rescue.Rehab.Reform wrote.

“He sat there without a second thought for a week! A week! It wasn’t until a volunteer managed to ‘get permission’ to visit the shelter was he seen. And then, he was given a day to get out. Absolutely sickening!”

After seeing the extent of Sanford’s neglect with their own eyes, the rescuers were determined to treat him and provide him with a loving home.

“We can’t imagine the pain he has been in, but we’re going to try to help him,” they vowed.

After the 10-year-old dog was treated, his life changed for the better as foster mother Karen Velazquez took him in her home.

“He has been all smiles ever since. I think the minute he came to my home, he realized he was in a safe place,” she said in an interview with The Dodo, explaining how Sanford’s personality and expressions went 180 degrees after he was rescued.

As it happens, however, the senior dog’s story isn’t quite over yet. The pooch is now waiting for a loving family to accept him in their home permanently.

“He’ll be a great family dog. He’ll get along with other dogs and all humans. He even does well with kids,” the Dallas Dog RRR director added.
