Like with many mothers, maternal instinct kicks in immediately when babies are born, and especially when they’re threatened.
One pit bull demonstrated her devotion to her newborn pups in extenuating circumstances when the entire family was left abandoned.
Just hours after giving birth, the pit bull and her puppies were left on the doorstep of a Sacramento, CA, SPCA. The mom was left without food or water and was in charge of taking care of all 10 of her babies.

Instead of straying away to find water, food, or help, the mother stayed with the puppies until help arrived. The puppies would not have been able to survive long without their mom by their side.
When shelter staff arrived in the morning, they found all 11 dogs waiting. The family was left without any explanation or apparent reason.

Many animal shelters are overtaxed, taking in animals whenever they can, but only one or two at a time. Caring for a pit bull and 10 puppies is overwhelming for any shelter or foster home.
Fortunately, the shelter welcomed the dogs and found a foster home where they could all stay together. The mother was sweet and embraced the help. Without this help, the family may not have survived.

The puppies will remain with their foster family for several months as they nurse and grow. Once ready to be separated, they will be placed in forever homes.
