An acid attack survivor has opened up about his tragic past as he revealed he still has nightmares about what happened five years ago.
Back in 2016, 35-year-old Daniel Rotariu sustained severe burns to his body, including his head and his arms, when his ex-girlfriend, Katie Leong, doused him in acid while he was sleeping.
While the man eventually moved on with his life, got married, and started a family with his former carer, he cannot escape the past that still haunts him at night years later.
“I do have nightmares sometimes – not every day but I do. The insomnia, I think it’s also because I am inactive, I am not working, just sitting in the house – that is not good,” Mr Rotariu admitted.
“I can’t pass one day without swearing at Katie for what she did. It’s hard to forget about what happened.”
As the 35-year-old admitted, his sleeping issues have only gotten worse during the pandemic due to the national lockdown.
In an interview with the Nottingham Post, Rotariu, who has since become a father, also recalled the devastating attack that left him scarred for life.
“It was 10-20 seconds maybe, in that moment I believed that I am dreaming until the pain started to kick in,” he said.
“I said ‘what is happening?’ It was so painful. I felt it in my mouth, the taste – the acid had a strange taste. It was a sharp taste. Straight away in my head [I knew] that was acid.”
Following the brutal attack, Rotariu went on to marry his carer Anna with whom he started a family. Meanwhile, the man’s attacker, Katie Leong, has been found guilty of attempted murder and sentenced to life in prison.
