John Travolta may be facing a moment of reckoning after he seems to distance himself from Scientology during and after his wife’s death due to cancer.
The actor has been a devout follower for 45 years.
Travolta has recently lost his wife of 30 years, Kelly Preston, on July 12th. Preston had been fighting off her breast cancer. After somberly announcing her passing away, Travolta said that she bravely fought off the disease with the support of her loved ones.
In the same post, the actor also expressed his gratitude to the doctors and nurses at MD Anderson Cancer Center, who treated Preston throughout her disease. Located in Houston, the center is widely considered as one of the leading cancer treatment facilities in the US.
Observers of Scientology believe that the very remark is a strong hint that Travolta may be distancing himself from the controversial sect. This is because L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology, strongly opposed all sorts of radiation including chemotherapy.
Former members such as Jeffrey Augustine believe that the way in which Travolta wholeheartedly thanked and endorsed the work of the medical staff is a good indication that the actor is distancing himself from the sect.
Furthermore, Augustine pointed out how Travolta never mentioned Scientology or any religion in the same statement. Describing the sect as a “non-factor” in the actor’s remarks, Augustine suggested that this may be the way in which the 66 year old actor says he doesn’t need a church.
Although the Daily Mail reached out to both Travolta and the spokespeople of Scientology, they did not receive an answer from either one over this issue.
Travolta, along with fellow actor Tom Cruise, has been one of the most vocal and famous followers of the Church of Scientology. He is said to have joined the sect in 1975.
A former bodyguard who coincidentally worked with both Cruise and Travolta said it is too early to conclude that the latter has definitely stepped away from his beliefs. However, he added that Travolta must be going through great pain because he saw how much the two loved and relied on each other.
