An adorable puppy was born with green fur thanks to a rare pigment that was present in his mother’s womb.

As Cristian Mallocci, a farmer from the Mediterranean island of Sardinia in Italy, explained, one of the five puppies from the litter born at his farm had green fur.

Named after his unique looks, little Pistachio was born to a cross-breed mother with white fur. While all of his siblings have white fur as well, Pistachio came to the world looking green.

As it is believed, the pup’s fur temporarily turned green after coming into contact with the pigment known as biliverdin.

While Pistachio looks different from his siblings right now, the color will eventually fade until all of the green pigment is gone.

According to Mr. Mallocci, Pistachio will stay at his farm and join the pack of eight other dogs that the farmer owns. While the pup will be trained to watch over sheep, his siblings will reportedly be found new homes.

As the Italian farmer added, he shared photos of his new family member to put a smile on people’s faces. He also claimed that the pup’s green color is a sign of good luck.

In addition to bile pigment biliverdin, which can be found in dogs’ placentas, puppies can also turn green or yellow if they come in contact with meconium while in the womb.

Meconium is the stool of an infant mammal that can temporarily color the fur, especially if it is white.
