While people are forced to live with social distancing measures because of COVID-19, this airport from Wisconsin has come up with an innovative and safe form of entertainment for the locals.
According to the report of Travel and Leisure, Dane Country Regional Airport situated in Madison has opened the first annual drive-thru light display last weekend. The light show is made up of as much as 2 million separate lights.
The show, which is free to visit, is situated along the International lane of the airport and consists of six individual displays. It pays special tributes to health care staff.
A representative of the airport, Nick Kazmierczack, said: “Most people are starting to get bored in the house. There’s only so much you can do.”
“A new event and outdoor activity they can go to with their family is something people are really enjoying, as well as the fact that they get to pay tribute to all these frontline, essential workers,” he continued.
The airport’s website tells that all of the six displays in the light show have a separate theme, including “spring is blooming,” “tropical vacation,” “fly non-stop” and “cheer on Wisconsin sports.”
Main destinations including Las Vegas, New York, Nashville and Orlando are highlighted and nods are given to iconic images like Mickey Mouse and the Statue of Liberty.
Nick said that the drive-thru has seen some 400 cars since its opening.
The light show, called the flight of lights, was planned to be opened in May but the administration of the airport had to change plans because of COVID-19.
“COVID-19 hit and after about a week of a safer at home order here, we decided let’s alter this a little bit, keep the same spring, aviation theme, but add some tributes to the frontline workers,” Nick said.
He further noted: “We wanted to do that on a larger scale and really say thank you to all these essential employees who are really getting us through the pandemic.”
The display will remain open every night until May 10.
According to the New York Times, so far there have been 4,620 confirmed cases of novel coronavirus in Wisconsin and the death toll so far stands at 243. On the national level, the number of cases is about to touch a million, with more than 40,000 people having lost their lives.
