Derby Rugby Club bosses were left devastated after their £400,000 all-weather artificial grass pitch ruined by heavy rain.
The artificial grass pitch now looks like a crumpled rug and the club, which is next to the River Derwent in Derby, is unplayable now.
Club chairman Martyn Murney said it will take weeks to sort it out.
He said: “It will take weeks to sort, although the cost is being born by the RFU which owns the pitch. It’s the worst of the worst.
We’re on a flood plain so we’re familiar with flooding but this was a big one. ”Disappointed fans criticized the idea of building the pitch on a flood plain. One fan wrote: Not exactly living up to it’s ‘all-weather’ credentials. Whose bright idea was it to build on a flood plain anyway? Looks more like a crumpled rug.’
While another fan wrote: ‘I used to have this problem with my Subbuteo pitch. Someone get the iron out, it’ll get sorted in no time.’
The pitches and greens at Fishlake Cricket and Bowls Club have also been ruined.
A spokesman for Doncaster Council said: “Residents who have been badly affected by flooding in Fishlake are not advised to return home just yet. There is still a lot of deep standing water in the area present significant safety risks.”
“The advice from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue is that where you can not see the ground it is unsafe to walk or drive.
The advice from the Environment Agency is that despite there being a pumping strategy in place, recovery is expected to take weeks not days.
”After days of flooding, people have been warned more rain is expected to hit the country.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson also warned people of more flooding across the country.
