Thomas Pausuan, is a father of two and an Amazon employee.
He worked at an Amazon warehouse located in Philadelphia and was tested positive for coronavirus in April.
As per the Amazon policy, the employees are eligible to get paid sick leave. However, the company stopped paying him the day after he was taken to the hospital due to high fever, heavy breathing, and diagnosis of the virus.
It is the most recent example of Amazon failing to adhere to its promise of paying employees two weeks of salary if they are sick or quarantined. Many workers have revealed that they have missed payments on their bills or had to borrow money from friends and family on multiple occasions.
A spokesperson from the company said that they are working for the staff on an individual basis and collecting information that is needed to approve the time off, along with pay for the diagnosis of the virus and quarantine.
He added that Amazon has more than 1000 sites across the globe, and an array of precautionary measures have been introduced in the past couple of weeks centering on operational processes, benefits, pay, and safety.
He added that there may be some cases where the company does not get things right, but it can assure these are just some exceptional cases.
The company further added that it would be depositing the eligible money in the bank account of Thomas Pausuan after the report was published.
Moreover, the employees of Amazon have also complained that the department, which takes care of sick leave payments is understaffed even prior to the pandemic. And ever since then, there has been a constant occurrence of such cases.
Pausuan experienced symptoms of coronavirus in March, and he was worried that he might be suffering from the virus as a couple of employees of the warehouse also tested positive.
He immediately isolated himself from the family, but it was impossible to maintain social distance in their small home. While the family also got sick, the condition of Pausuan was the most severe.
