Abdul-Majeed Marouf Ahmed Alani, who allegedly sabotaged one of the carrier’s planes, could have ties to ISIS, according to reports.
The federal prosecutors believe Alani ‘displayed support for ISIS’ and also expressed a desire that “Allah would use ‘divine powers’ to harm non-Muslims, and had several ISIS propaganda videos on his phone, including a video showing a person being shot in the head,” Fox News reported.
“Federal investigators said they also learned that Alani lied about taking a trip to Iraq in March to visit his brother and also sent $700 to someone in Iraq.
“Alani allegedly told an American Airlines co-worker in June his brother was kidnapped and became a member of the terrorist organization.”
Federal prosecutors also argued that Alani shouldn’t be allowed out pending trial as he admitted to having an ‘evil side.’ He also appears to show a sympathy for Islamic radicals abroad.
He was ultimately denied bail.
Alani, a seasoned mechanic, is accused of sabotaging the plane by putting a piece of Styrofoam in the nose cone, which stopped the aircraft’s geological and communication system and “disabled a part used to gauge airspeed and other critical flight data.”
According to an earlier report, “Alani glued the foam inside the tube leading from the outside of the plane to its air data module.”
What he did could’ve meant disaster for 150 people aboard the aircraft flying to Nassau in the Bahamas. Fortunately, pilots received an alert to the issue when a warning light went off before the plane left the ground.
A ‘routine maintenance’ check showed the ‘modifications’ made by Alani and the problem was immediately solved.
He will stand trial for “willfully damaging, destroying or disabling an aircraft” this year.
