Wil Loesel had just started doing what he really wished on doing for a long time, being a teacher.
But the teacher had no idea his plans will be disturbed by a pandemic locking people away from school and his diagnosis with cancer.
The math teacher had not imagined that he would find himself in such a situation where he would have to battle with all the odds to give what he can to his students.
Despite all the obstacles, his determination has not waved and he continues to teach his students from his hospital bed.
Loesel says “Yes it was terrible to find out that I am suffering from cancer. I could have cried about it for days but that does not change anything. It won’t cure me but will keep me away from my responsibilities.
Some of my students have been through a lot as kids and perhaps my message can change their life for better. If I could make even one percent of change in someone’s life, that will be the greatest achievement for me.
We can go through things that are exceptionally difficult. It can either stop us or empower and motivate us to move forward.”
It was right at the start of coronavirus breakout in the USA in March when Loesel was diagnosed with IV Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
His school Albemarle Road Middle had also shut down. The father of two sons had just started his profession in teaching 6 months ago.
He wanted to add value to people’s lives and so he quit his job in Corporate America where he worked for 15 years and took up teaching math.
He says “I have turned 40 and maybe this is what made me realize that I only wish to help people and my job is not giving me the opportunity. So, I decided to switch careers and this makes me happy.”
