German Chancellor Angela Merkel has done it again for the ninth time, as she has been crowned by Forbes as the world’s most powerful woman.
The publication praised Angela for her steely reserve, and for standing up for Donald Trump, the President of the U.S.A. She was also applauded for her open-door refugee policy that saw more than one million Syrian refugees arrive in the country amidst the 2015 migrant crisis.
Angela grew up in former East Germany behind the iron curtain and rose to be the Chancellor of Germany. She has been serving the position since 2005. She has also led Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party from 2000-2018, for 18 years.
She has been hailed often as the leader of the free world and as the European Union’s de facto leader. Her time is expected to end in 2021 in the office, with Angela announcing the previous year that she wished to step down during the next federal election in the country.
She would be the second longest-serving Germany’s chancellor, behind Helmut Kohl.
The next name on the list is Christine Lagarde, who is the first woman to head the ECB (European Central Bank) on 1st November. The third name on the list is Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives.
Her roled makers her the second-in-line for the US presidency as well as the U.S.A.’s highest-ranking elected woman.
This year, Forbes included 23 new names, including teen climate activist, Greta Thunberg, at number 100. The list also includes Tsai Ing-wen, the first female leader in Taiwan as well as the current President of Taiwan.
