The ‘Friends’ star says there should be fewer Marvel movies to bring greater variety to theaters.
Jennifer Aniston has hit out at the superhero genre and said the market is already over-saturated with comic book movies.
The 50-year-old said in an interview with the Variety that she believes the increasing number of Marvel movies is ‘diminishing’ the quality that used to be there in theaters.
“It wasn’t until the last couple of years when these streaming services were just sort of exploding with this amount of quality that I actually started to think, ‘Wow, that’s better than what I just did’,” Aniston said.
“And then you’re seeing what’s available out there and it’s just diminishing and diminishing in terms of, it’s big Marvel movies. Or things that I’m not just asked to do or really that interested in living in a green screen.”
Instead of being bombarded with superheroes, the actress said she would like to see comebacks of character-driven comedies and dramas.
“I think we would so love to have the era of Meg Ryan come back. I just think it would be nice to go into a movie theater, sit cozy. I think we should have a resurgence. Let’s get the Terms of Endearment back out there. You know, Heaven Can Wait, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, Goodbye Girl.”
With almost 20 new Marvel movies already in the line for the next few years, it doesn’t appear like we’ll be coming back to era of Meg Ryan any time soon.
Aniston is not the first one to speak about ‘Marvel fatigue.’
Last week, Martin Scorsese also hit out at the superhero genre and said he does not consider them to be cinema anymore.
“I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema,” he said. “Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”
