Following the devastating fire that engulfed the 850-year-old Notre Dame Cathedral in flames, architects have suggested building a rooftop pool to replace the burned roof of the religious body.
Despite traditionalists suggesting that the cathedral should be rebuilt in a way that will preserve its original looks, architects have come up with various innovative ideas.
After the cathedral got severely damaged by the fire, the French government called for an intercontinental competition for the architects in order to come up with the best possible design for the new version of the cathedral.
According to French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe, the competition’s goal is to give “Notre Dame a spire adapted to techniques and challenges of our times.”
One Stockholm-based company dared to challenge the minds of traditionalists who suggested the cathedral should look the same as it did before the fire by proposing to complement it with a rooftop pool.
“A cathedral is in our opinion not an isolated island in the urban fabric; it belongs to the city and to the people,” UMA explained in an interview with The Guardian.
Another award-winning architect suggested transforming the cathedral into a contemporary, eco-friendly building with a crystal glass roof, solar panels, and a garden inside.
As Vincent Callebaut explained, his design would allow the cathedral to generate more energy than it could ever use thanks to the specially designed glass rooftop.
In addition, the architect pointed out the cathedral could hold weekly farmers’ market in order to sell vegetables and fruits grown underneath the roof.
“As we start thinking about Notre Dame’s reconstruction, questions arise as to how we can architecturally summarize the human intelligence of our era and depict the prospects of Catholicism,” the renowned architect said.
Another architect firm, Studio NAB, proposed turning the spire of the cathedral into a massive greenhouse.
