Ariana Grande is suing the fashion retailer Forever 21, she said, that they used a lookalike of her after a collaboration between the clothing company and the pop star fell through sometime between late 2018 and early 2019.
According to documents filed in California, Grande alleged that Forever 21 wanted her to promote its “clothing and accessory products.”
Grande claims the company falsely made it look like she was backing the brand by using imagery from her “Thank U, Next” album and hired a model that looks just like her to recreate scenes from her “7 Rings” music video.
According to Grande’s lawsuit, Forever 21 continuously ran the campaign on their website and social media. An ad posted on February 8, which is still up on the Forever 21 Facebook page. The ad shows a clothing collection promoted with a slogan that plays off the lyrics from “7 Rings.”
This partnership, didn’t work because Forever 21 was not paying the fair amount for a celebrity of Ms. Grande’s stature,” she said, and the singer declined its offer.
“You want it. We got it!” the ad reads. A model whose facial features look similar to Grande’s wears her hair in the pop star’s signature ponytail, with accessories that match the ones Grande wears in the “7 Rings” video. The color scheme of the ad also matches the music video: neon pink and purple.
A spokesperson for the company said, “Forever 21 does not comment on pending litigation as per company policy.”
“That said, while we dispute the allegations, we are huge supporters of Ariana Grande and have worked with her licensing company over the past two years,” the statement continued. “We are hopeful that we will find a mutually agreeable resolution and can continue to work together in the future.”
