A fifth grader was left stunned after his Army Sergeant Mother surprised him at school.
Sgt. Desiree Lancey was deployed in Kuwait and couldn’t meet her son for a year.
Her son, Kael Lancey, who is in fifth grade at Chaffee Elementary School, was working on a school project with other children when his mother surprised him.
The mother showed up as the school’s eagle mascot. She said before surprising her son: “My heart has been racing all morning! I have been so nervous.”
As she took off the mascot head, her son couldn’t believe his eyes. He hugged her and couldn’t stop his tears.
“It’s hard being in the military, being away from them so much. But seeing his face, that just initial when I walked in and I saw his face I couldn’t breathe and I was so excited.”
“I just kept saying, ‘there he is, there he is. I was ready to rip off that mascot head and go see him.”
“He’s my world. He and his sister are my worlds. His reaction was bigger than I thought it was going to be so that made it ever so bittersweet” she said.
“God is so good. It’s rough, but it’s worth it. Small sacrifices for a long-term gain.”
When her son was asked by a reporter: “Kael, how does it feel to have your mom back?”
He said: “Great, like…I would’ve run over everybody,” Kael told his mom.
“To come and get me? That’s the best answer ever,” Lancey said.
Their reunion left everyone in tears. It is definitely so hard living away from your family for so long.
