An asteroid that is said to be half the size of Mount Everest will cross paths with Earth next month, and the scientists have declared that it will not collide with the blue planet.
This particular asteroid was first discovered by NASA in 1998 and is called 52768(1998 OR2). It is 1-1.25 miles wide and will fly by within 3,908,791 miles with a speed of 19,461 miles per hour.
The scientists have also confirmed and provided details that the asteroid is big enough to cause a lot of global effects if it collided with the Earth.
The flyby of the asteroid is likely to take place on Wednesday, April 29th at 4:56 am ET, as the information provided by NASA’s Near-Earth Object Studies.
It is known to track down all the Near-Earth Objects (NEAT), which might collide with the blue planet.
NASA discovered 52768 when it first started using the state-of-the-art data analysis and computing hardware.
The project manager for NEAT Dr. Steven Pravdo of JPL said that the hardware helps them to speed up the search for all near-earth objects.
The asteroid is said to orbit around the sun for 3.67 years or 1,340 days and completes the rotation on its axis within 4.11 days, which was first reported by CNN.
However, a different asteroid made headlines earlier this month, when it was discovered by the scientist to be orbiting around planet earth for the past 3 years.
This particular asteroid is named 2020 CD3, was discovered by the Catalina Sky Survey, which is funded by NASA.
This particular cosmic object is estimated to be about 6-12 feet in diameter and carries a surface brightness, which is known to be similar to the C-type asteroids.
These types of asteroids are known to be rich in carbon and are pretty common as well.
