In the past, it was hard to control asthma attacks but now thanks to science and technology it is very easy to combat asthma attacks.
Inhalers have made life easy for those who suffer from asthma.
Therefore, doctors advise the patients of asthma to keep their inhalers near them. But now a day’s few schools do not allow kids to keep inhalers with them.
What the administration and teachers of these schools do is that they confiscate the inhalers and hand them over to the principals.
This incident happened with a 12-year-old boy named Ryan Gibbons who could not get his inhaler when he got an asthma attack.
Ryan studied at Elgin County School in Staffordsville, Ontario, Canada. As his school confiscated his inhaler so his mother used to put a spare inhaler in his bag just because, he was unable to rush to the principal’s office whenever he got asthma attacks in the past.
But alas whenever he brought his spare inhaler teachers would get that from him and instead they complained Ryan’s mother that he is bringing inhaler in the school.
The day when he died of severe attack he could have been saved but school authorities confiscated his inhaler and locked it in the principal’s office thus Ryan was unable to reach to office.
He suffered from an asthma attack when he was playing with his friends in recess. It became unable for Ryan to breathe and he was fighting for his life and his friends knew that he had an asthma attack and his inhaler is in the office so they grabbed him and took him to the principal’s office so that he can be given his first aid.
Ryan’s mother Sarah Gibbons told in an interview with CBC that, “she could not understand why they did not let her son keep an inhaler with him”.
She urged lawmakers to make a law in the memory of Ryan as “Ryan’s law” in which students will be allowed to keep prescribed inhalers with them.
In the United States, almost all of the 50 states have passed a law to let the students keep inhalers with them but some schools do not follow it. An expert says that school administrators do not allow to keep inhalers because students can misuse it.
A nursing professor Maureen George is of the view that schools should not let children do exercise if they do not provide inhalers and in the absence of a nurse but most of the schools take inhalers because of anti-drug policy.
