An Australian school renamed Mother’s Day, to “Acknowledgment Day” as the principal stated, “We no longer subscribe to a binary world.
”
According to The Daily Mail: Brunswick East Primary School in Melbourne, “In previous years, the school has organized a fundraising stall where children could buy Mother’s Day merchandise such as mugs, trinkets, candles, and soaps.” But from now the stall renamed and called “appreciation stall” instead, where children can buy gifts for anyone.
Principal Janet Di Pilla explained the reason to change its name in a newsletter to parents, reported the Herald Sun.
” You will see further in this newsletter a fantastic poster for our first “Acknowledgment Day.point 88 | ” We will be holding 2 of these days each year; one to coincide with the “traditional” Mother’s Day and the other to coincide with the “traditional” Father’s Day.point 236 |
There has been a lot of discussion about the reason we celebrate these days and the naming of the celebration.point 91 | I believe that days like this are important because we do need to stop and show gratitude for those around us.point 181 | However, it is also very important that we make these occasions as inclusive as possible.point 256 |

I sincerely hope that this change in name will show that we as a community recognize that our families are not made up of any particular combination of people and that we no longer subscribe to a binary world. I am sorry that in the past we have offended some members of our community and I hope that this acknowledgment goes some way to address any hurt which has occurred in the past.”
Mrs. Di Pilla also said that she had discussed with the staff, parents, and students before installing the change.
Right-wing political party Australian Liberty Alliance slammed the school for this change.
It wrote online: ‘We believe the natural family is the core building block of human society and must be protected.’
But some parents supported the change, with one telling the Herald Sun: ‘Some kids, for whatever reason, may not have a mother in their lives, so I don’t mind if they broaden the stall so those kids feel included.’
