A 6-year-old boy named Finn Daly of West Hartford, Connecticut has Down syndrome and is on the autism spectrum.
He lives with his parents, Kevin and Brooke.
According to his parents, Finn loves a particular American flag which is attached to a large tree that hangs near the sidewalk where he steps.
“I think it’s the movement,” Kevin said.
“If it’s moving, if the wind is blowing, he would sit there for an hour and just watch the flag go back and forth, which is kind of the beauty of Finn, too,” Brooke said.
“We’re fortunate we have a lot of flags in the neighborhood, so it creates for very long and slow walks,” Kevin said.
Disque who enjoys building, got the idea to construct a simple wooden bench for the boy when he noticed how Finn enjoys sitting on the sidewalk watching the flag.
“I never really met him before so when I got the word about the little guy, I knew I wanted to meet him,” said Disque.
According to WVIT, Finn was walking with his dad when they noticed the bench. The father and son stumbled upon a new bench right in front of Finn’s favorite tree. Brooke got teary-eyed when her husband told her about the bench.
“I was overcome with emotions,” said Brooke. “It’s a reminder of the sweetness and kindness that a neighbor would do that for a little boy.”
“He loves it, he loves that he no longer has to sit on the ground. For him to go out of his way to take the time to do that for someone he doesn’t even know, it’s truly amazing.”
“Finn always stops by this particular flag because it’s off the front of their tree and easy for him to look at,” said Brooke. “He loves to sit on the ground and observe the flag’s colors.”
The parents say the bench means a lot to their son and he loves sitting there admiring the flag.
“It was fun to do, I like building and Finn is like a super kid,” said Disque. “I’m happy that it had this effect, I didn’t expect it at all.”
