It’s been ten years since Avatar broke all box office records.
The wait for the ground-breaking science-fiction sequels to the most anticipated films is finally coming to an end as the production said they just completed the second and third installments!
Avatar 2 is set to premiere on December 8, 2020, while the third film will be released on December 17, 2021. This comes after Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5 were confirmed in 2017.
After its release in 2009, Avatar broke all box office records, grossing $2,787,965,087 and toppling Titanic to become the highest-grossing movie of all-time.
The first film also took almost ten years to complete, with Cameron’s original idea for the movie cooked up in 1994.
Tonowari, the leader of the Metkayina, the reef people clan, will be played by Cliff Curtis.
50-year-old Cliff will work alongside a host of returning cast members, such as Sigourney Weaver, 69, Sam Worthington, 42, and Zoe Saldana, 40.
It was in April 2017 when Cameron made the announcement that production had started on the four sequels.
“Great to be working with the best team in the business! Avatar takes flight as we begin concurrent production on four sequels,” he wrote on Facebook.
This comes during claims Avatar 4 and 5 may never be made because of the upcoming Disney-Fox merger that could ‘affect Cameron’s creative control over the films.’
Disney CEO Bob Iger said Avatar 4 and 5, costing an estimated $1 billion, have not been greenlit. But Cameron has mentioned he is working on the sequels concurrently.
It was claimed Fox wanted to see Avatar 2 and 3 before giving the go signal to 4 and 5.
Speaking about the huge project, director James Cameron said: “The thing is, my focus isn’t on Avatar 2. It’s on Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5 equally. That’s exactly how I’m approaching it.”
