Birth photography has become a growing trend during the last decade.
In a piece for the New York Times in 2012, Elissa Gootman attributed the demand to “both a surge of interest in the childbirth process … and a greater desire to catch all the moments of life.”
Photographers Monet Moutrie and Jennifer Mason introduced Birth Becomes Her a year later, a platform for both experienced birth photographers and parents to be.
The website also holds an international birth photographers competition “to bring attention to birth photographs from all over the world,” the founders said.
“Birth photography is currently one of the most important documentary photography in the world,” Mason told us.
The founders, Monet Moutrie and Jennifer Mason began and introduced this contest back in 2016 after being persuaded that birth photography is the one that needs to be shown to the world and it very close to everybody as everyone faces and experiences this phenomenon of parenthood.
These pictures are supposed to remove the fear of giving birth as Mason said, ” we hope that these images help dispel fear”.
The main idea behind these pictures was to draw attention to breastfeeding when the breastfeeding week was announced in 2016. This further turned into a labor contest.
This showed a tremendous response and only in the first year people submitted a couple of hundred of photos which was amazing.
However, this idea spread and grew and this year the contestants submitted around 1200 submissions and these submissions were received from all over the world.
