Sixteen babies received omeprazole to help treat acid reflux and indigestion, according to Spanish publication El Pais.
But the drugs had somehow become contaminated with minoxidil, an alopecia remedy.
The youngsters in Spain have developed hypertrichosis or ‘werewolf syndrome,’ which causes excessive hair growth across their bodies after taking the tainted medication.
According to Global News 10, parents were ‘surprised by the appearance of hair in the babies, especially in the facial area.’ They took their babies to the doctors to determine what was going on.
Health sources said to El Pais that when the babies stopped taking the medicine their hair growth also subsided.
Parents and guardians have been advised to visit a hospital if their child has taken the formula.
The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products has removed many batches of the medication from circulation as they try to make further investigations.
Most of the batch of meds from Farma-Quimica Sur with lot number 11072/10/42 has been recalled with the last few missing packets still being tracked down.
At the beginning of the month, another three reports were made and another batch of Farma-Quimica Sur’s medicine was pulled out from shelves.
Officials believe up to 30 Andalusian pharmacies and over 50 batches of the drug have been affected by the contamination.
Farma-Quimica Sur can no longer manufacture, distribute or import drugs as its license had been suspended.
