A baby born to a patient with coronavirus has been diagnosed with the killer disease only 30 hours the mother gave birth.
This sparked fears that the infection could be transmitted from mothers to their children in the womb.
The saddening news came after doctors claimed that the infection might also be spread by feces.
The baby diagnosed with coronavirus was born in Wuhan. Doctors gave the baby a test 30 hours after the delivery and the result was positive.
The 3-day-old baby, whose gender hasn’t been revealed, was transferred to Children’s Hospital in Wuhan.
The chief physician from the Department of Neonatal Medicine, Dr. Zeng Lingkong, said: “This reminds us to pay attention to a potential new transmission route of the coronavirus – vertical transmission from mothers to babies.”
The baby is one of the two newborns that have been diagnosed with the deadly disease by Wuhan Children’s Hospital.
The other child, a 17-day-old baby, was diagnosed with coronavirus after being born on January 13. According to hospital, the baby’s family hired a nurse to watch over on January 22 but the nurse was diagnosed with the killer virus.
Doctors are yet to confirm if the child had caught coronavirus from its nurse or its mother.
One internet user commented: “Poor little innocent newborn didn’t deserve that, no one does. I hope he recovers, God bless him.”
Another wrote: “Hope this little baby survives. Much love to mummy and baby on what should be a most special time.”
A third added: “Poor little mite, what an unfortunate start in life. I wish mother and baby well.”
