It was on March 31 when baby George Gerrard was diagnosed with coronavirus after developing a high fever.

His mother, 33-year-old Sam Deane-Gerrard, only went out to buy groceries at a local supermarket and medicine at a pharmacist.

“Both times, as soon as I got in, I washed my hands,” she expressed. “I am a loss to how George developed coronavirus.”

The mother slammed those who were not taking the virus seriously and said: “I really want to knock their blocks off. My boy could have died.”

When baby George woke up crying with a high fever in the early hours of March 31, parents Sam and David contacted Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

“They told us to pack an overnight bag but for not one moment – because we had been so careful – did we think it was coronavirus,” Sam shared. “But when we arrived only George and I were allowed in.

“We were taken to a ward and he was straight away tested for a corona. It wasn’t pleasant. He gagged as a long cotton bud was pushed down his throat.”

George was given antibiotics and filled 30 diapers with diarrhea within the next few hours. “He was so lethargic he couldn’t even smile,” the distressed mother said.

“His blood pressure soared and he had a really fast heartbeat,” she added. “It was horrible seeing him like that. He’s only little.”

“You could tell something was up because the medics all came in covered in visors, masks and glasses. But when they said it was coronavirus, I was stunned. I have no idea how he contracted it.

“They were brilliant, and really looked after him.”

Sam added: “So when I saw people the next day sunbathing in the parks I was furious,” she said. “And now the Prime Minister has coronavirus. It can affect anyone. I think I probably had it, but it didn’t affect me.”

George left the hospital and continued his isolation at home.
