A one-year-old baby died in a car crash caused by his speeding mother who crashed into a marquee while driving over 120 mph in a 45-mph zone.
The incident occurred at Rampart and Lake Mead boulevards in Las Vegas at around 7:17 in the evening on July 12.
According to the reports, 23-year-old Lauren Prescia was speeding and driving under the influence when she crashed and caused the death of her son Royce.
As 8 News Now reported, the father of the baby, who was in a separate car at the time of the incident, told the police that Prescia began speeding after vowing to get home before him. While talking to her on the phone, he allegedly “told her to slow down because she had his son in the car with her.”
As the young mother reached Rampart, she allegedly struck the car of a 36-year-old driver and lost control of her vehicle. After slamming into a marquee, Prescia’s car was split in half and baby Royce died at the scene. Meanwhile, both Prescia and the unidentified 36-year-old woman sustained minor injuries.
“It’s the saddest thing. I have children, and I cannot imagine losing a child, especially if it was my fault,” Steve Dantzig, a witness of the car crash, said.
According to the authorities, excessive speed and impairment were responsible for causing the deadly car crash.
After the incident, Prescia has been charged with reckless driving, driving under the influence, and endangerment of a child.
