In an unusual case, a nine-month-old baby girl sleeping in a pram was killed from asphyxia after a cat sat on her face blocking air.
The girl was left unable to breathe and because of suffocation, she died.
This incident took place in the district of Vinnytsia in Ukraine where the baby girl, Alexandra, was left in her house’s backyard by her mother while she was performing household chores.
Her twenty-two-year-old mother, Snezhana came to check on her baby when she found one of her domestic cats sitting on Alexandra’s face.
The cat jumped off immediately but her baby was not breathing. Snezhana instantly called an ambulance and a local paramedic.
As per Halyna Zakhrachuk, the village paramedic, the cat was attracted by the smell of milk and a warm place in the pram. So, the cat went inside the pram and sat on the baby’s face.
Halyna further revealed that the baby was well dressed with her arms out, and when they arrived, she was still warm.
However, the baby was declared to be in a clinical death state. The entire team tried to resuscitate Alexandra for 30-40 minutes without achieving any success.
The family had two pet cats and it was unclear which one caused the death.
According to a local policeman, Pavlo Darmorgrai, the mother found the domestic cat lying on the baby and sleeping on her head. This leads to the death of the only child of the couple.
The body was then sent to forensic experts who performed an autopsy.
Since there were no injury marks on Alexandra’s body, the preliminary report suggested the cause of death to be asphyxia. This heart-wrenching case is considered to be accidental.
