A baby girl was found inside a locked SUV as temperatures in Texas reached 90F, which means the interior temperature of the vehicle was more than 130 degrees.
Police officers rescued the one-year-old girl, who was found sweating, crying, and covered in her own vomit.
Duncanville Police Department said officers responded to the scene after receiving a call from a passerby reporting a baby restrained in her car seat.
Bodycam video shows an officer calling paramedics as he takes his baton and smashes the window. He opens the car door, showing the baby crying and covered in her own vomit.
“I know, I know, I’m sorry,” the officer can be heard saying in the video, trying to calm the baby down as he unbuckled the seat belt to take her to safety.
The officer put the infant in his air-conditioned car until paramedics arrived and she was taken to a hospital.
The child’s mother arrived in the same car, along with the baby’s two older siblings and grandmother.
The police department said in a statement: “All indications seem to point to this being a mistake caused by false assumptions and faulty communication about the infant’s well-being.”
Officers made a referral about the story to Child Protective Services and also to a Dallas County Grand Jury to determine if criminal or civil charges should be filed.
“The Duncanville Police Department is thankful this incident did not result in a more tragic outcome as so many unfortunate incidents of children being left in hot vehicles do,” police said.
“Due to an alert and concerned citizen calling, and due to the definitive, quick actions of Officer Pinilla, both of whom will undoubtedly be regarded as heroes by the rescued infant for the rest of its life, a tragedy was averted.”
