A baby born without legs and arms due to a rare genetic condition has left her family members and doctors perplexed in India.
A 28-year-old woman from Sakla village of Sironj Tehsil gave birth to her baby, who was born with Tetra-Amelia, an autosomal recessive congenital disorder.
A video shows a woman holding the newborn who is wrapped in a pink blanket.
Dr. Suresh Aggarwal, a pediatrician in Sironj, said the little girl is perfectly healthy. Medics suggest that the girl will be taken in for assessments to check if her other organs have developed properly.
Tetra-Amelia syndrome is extremely rare and is caused by mutations in the WNT3 gene. According to pediatrician Dr. Prabhakar Tiwari and Bhopal CMHO, the disorder affects 1 in 100,000 babies.
According to a study conducted by Dr. Eva Bermejo-Sanchez of the Research Center on Congenital Anomalies at the Instituto de Salud Carlos III in Spain, the condition occurs in around 1 of every 71,000 pregnancy.
Another woman, Jasmine Self, was five months pregnant when an ultrasound scan showed her baby’s limbs were not developing.
After being advised to terminate the pregnancy, she and her boyfriend Rondell Wilson decided to stay strong and not give up their son.
Nicholas James Vujicic was also born with the syndrome in 1982. The inspirational father-of-four is now a motivational speaker and author of many books.
Vujicic has traveled to more than 40 countries to advocate motivation and positivity despite his condition. He also shares his story with students, community groups and prison inmates.
