One-Year-Old Baby Struck Down With Coronavirus As Confirmed Cases In Australia Climbs To More Than 1,000


A 1-year-old baby tested positive for coronavirus in one of the youngest cases in Australia to date.

Queensland Health said that the child was one of the 50 new coronavirus cases in the state. “Queensland has 50 new confirmed cases of novel coronavirus raising the state total to 144,” it announced.

“Of these new cases patients range between the ages of one and 79.

“Contact tracing is underway for the 50 new cases. Queensland Health will notify the community if any other public health alerts are required.”

An 8-month-old boy from South Australia is understood to be the youngest coronavirus patient in Australia. It was on March 5 when he tested positive after his mother was found to have the virus.

The two flew from Iran to Adelaide on March 1.

In New South Wales, a 6-year-old child was diagnosed with coronavirus. As of this writing, NSW has 307 confirmed cases and a total of 129  of those were acquired overseas.

Dr. Kerry Chant, NWS Chief Medical Officer, said that people are bringing the deadly virus from other countries.

“In recent weeks we’re seeing an increasing trend towards returning travellers from the UK, Europe and also the US,” Dr. Chant said.

She also warned that a person with coronavirus could’ve spread the infection at a function held on March 14 involving the University of Queensland and the University of Sydney.

“All people who attended this event are considered close contacts of a confirmed case and we ask that any attendees immediately self-isolate themselves for 14 days,” Dr. Chant said.

“It’s clearly a large function. This is very precautionary. And it occurs in a function where we basically can’t really identify very clearly how groups moved around in a space.”
