Once we grow into adults, our bodies and minds also grow to the point that we can better comprehend and engage with the world around us. That means we should be spending most of our time up and about to make the most of our time and capabilities but it’s ironic that the older we get, it seems the more we want to sleep.
Of course, there may be a lot of reasons for that.
The most obvious reason is the added stress of adulting. Then again, stress has always been a part of human life. Our ancestors had to deal with the stress of producing enough food in order to survive and surely, not knowing if the next band of armed horsemen that crest the rise will just pass through your village or ransack it would surely have been stressful enough. But there’s something about modern living that just saps energy and makes people want to just stay at home all day or through the weekend.
In contrast, children just seem to have boundless energy. Even if their bodies and minds cannot fully appreciate what’s around them, more likely than not they want to be engaged with their environment the whole time. And since they still haven’t grasped the concept of a schedule, they can be awake at odd times compared to us adults.
Naturally, parents want to introduce a concept of order around their family and so they quickly (and eagerly) teach the virtues of nap time and sleeping time to their children. It’s alright that time of the day? Okay, time to take a nap. Oh my, it’s getting late in the night. Time to go to sleep, little bunny.
While parents may secretly be wishing that they could go to sleep whenever they want wherever they want just as easily, children are more likely than not rebelling inside because they just don’t feel like sleeping yet!
Other children may wheedle or cry or just throw a tantrum to object, but little Sierra has taken a more suave approach because she’s just so skilled at making her parents believe “she’s right” even at just a year old!
The following clip show’s Sierra’s mom telling her that she should be sleeping. But Sierra just gesticulates and babbles a few words, even saying “I forgot!” at one point. It was an adorable exchange about why she’s awake and why she shouldn’t take a nap.
In the end, the mom tells Sierra she should sleep and then the little angel puts a finger to her cheek as if thinking. Mommy prompts her by saying, “Go on, think about it.”
“I thought she was supposed to be taking a nap, but she somehow made me think maybe she wasn’t or had a good excuse to be awake. How did she do that?” her mom later commented.
At least Sierra’s parents know she has a future in sales and marketing!
