The Balearic islands may continue to be opened for holidaymakers for summers, except for travelers from the UK.
Lago Negueruela, the tourism minister of Balearics, said that the local government is planning to keep the island closed till July due to the ongoing pandemic.
However, they are optimistic about reopening in August by setting the visitor numbers to 25%. This percentage can be gradually increased to another 25% in the following months, after evaluating the situation.
However, he also said that only tourists from some countries would be allowed to visit. He added that countries like the United Kingdom had taken a lot of time to implement right containment strategies, that is what put the island in a different place than the country.
This news comes as Spain may be looking to open its beaches by June. The sunbathers will be divided using physical barriers. The region is also designing future air travel amidst the coronavirus.
According to reports, Balearics had approximately 13.6 million tourists in 2019. Brits accounted for around a third of this number, followed by Germany.
Popular holiday destinations have been protesting against the forecasts that say that the tourism industry will not be able to get back until the very end of this year.
In fact, Yolanda Dia Minister of Labour for the Spanish Government is dealing with a lot of backlashes after her suggestion that hotels, as well as leisure establishments, may not open this year.
She said that the de-escalation period post the lockdown will be executed in two phases, and the tourism industry will not be on the priority.
Spanish hotels and resorts on both mainland and islands have opposed the suggestion and appear to be ready to fight back. They want to be open for at least the local people or tourists within Spain until the reopening of the European border.
So the Spanish beaches are expected to open by mid-June, but only locals will be able to visit. And as per the statement of the Tourism Minister, it appears that it would take several months before the Brits could enjoy in these regions.
