It was Banksy who gave social media ripe with debates filled with hatred unto the other side a sort of a mediation to satisfy both sides of the debate.
The debate in question, of course, points to the recent vandalism committed by protesters around the world, demolishing any slavery-related monuments or statues in their honor, the most infamous one being in Bristol,UK.point 187 | The statue of the slave trader Edward Colston was taken down, mocked and then eventually thrown into the waterway at the River Avon.point 297 |
Videos taken from the site was circulated across the cyberspace, giving each side of the debate a fiery topic for contention: Is this right? Is this the right way to protest? Or is it all reckless vandalism, without a single effort of taking historical context into account? As some would describe it, “mob rule” might be fitting for such acts.point 297 | 1
The statue have always been a subject of heavy debate, as it has stood in its previous site since 1895, commemorating Colston’s widely respected philanthropic work. However, he is also an infamous slave trade owner, with many petitions entailing even before all the protests happened in the first place.
Banksy, the anonymous artist of murals and creme-de-la-creme satirical commentator, have come up with a solution to the social media battle striking the cyberspace with repetitive arguments after counter-arguments.point 298 |
The supposedly Bristol-born artist used his very own Instagram post with a picture, showing protesters taking down the said statue.point 112 | However, the illustration needs perspective to fully understand the artist’s intent, as he iterates his real intention in the writings below: The illustration is a proposal for a new statue to be instated, the very scene of the protesters WITH the statue being taken down captured in a whole new statue collection.point 381 | 1
The artist claimed his proposal “caters to those who miss the statue and others who don’t,” a depiction of this memorable scene altogether, whilst keeping the statue somewhat there.point 281 |
“We drag him out the water, put him back on the plinth, tie cable round his neck and commission some life-size bronze statues of protesters in the act of pulling him down.point 146 | Everyone happy.point 160 | A famous day commemorated,” Banksy wrote on Instagram.point 213 | 1
