Jamie Nelson, 36, has made a career out of being a photographer in the fashion industry, having even photographed celebrities such as Drew Barrymore and Gwen Stefani.
But now she’s a bit of a celebrity herself thanks to her pink-pillared mansion in the San Fernando Valley that she converted into a 1970’s Barbie-themed house. Called the ‘Barbie meets Madonna Inn meets the 70’s,’ Jamie drew inspiration from Jayne Mansfield’s iconic Pink Palace.

Jamie said: “I moved to LA from New York City two years ago and I’ve been creating my dream house ever since. I came to LA with a pink house in mind.”
She’s been working on her house for the last two years to give her house that 70’s vibe.
“When I first moved into the house [it was] a blank canvas and I had to take each element that she left – whether it was the blue curtains or pink curtains – and determine where I was going to with each room based on that.”
But still, Jamie wanted to keep something of the previous owner’s style.
“It took a lot of work to figure out – how do I keep this classy and how do I respect the vision she had and still bring in myself and edge it up?”
Instead of making the whole house pink, Jamie made each room have a different color and theme.
“I don’t ever get tired of the colors of the rooms because there’s a blue room, a yellow room, a red room, a pink room, a gold room.”
Jamie has always been enamored of the past decades and had always dreamt of becoming an artist even as she was growing up in Colorado Springs.
Starting from the age of 17, she wanted a pink house where pool boys would serve her drinks as she lounged on a pink flamingo.
“I dreamt I’d live in my pink mansion and they’d serve me grapes and cocktails.”
As expected, there have been lots of requests to use her house as a location shoot for music videos, fashion campaigns, and commercials.
The blue room is usually utilized as a ‘wardrobe room’: “It gets used a lot for photo shoots, we’ve had celebrities come in here and enjoy their own private dressing room.”
And her ‘red bedroom’ has even been requested by Vogue.
“I got red fur and put that all over the ceilings and the walls here. I had to go to a store that sold the Hollywood red carpet.”
And to complete the sensual feel of the place, a 1970’s condom machine and retro pornographic magazines adorn the room.
It’s no surprise that whenever Jamie throws a party, someone inevitably takes a selfie in that room.
“No matter what you picture you take in here, it looks like a porno.”
In fact, even Jamie’s 80-year-old grandmother was so taken with the room that she asked her to keep it as is: “I didn’t know she was so spicy!”
For Jamie, her favorite room is the master bedroom that features a bathroom covered in pink fur from wall to wall.
“I spend a lot of time getting ready in that bathroom and it’s such a beautiful routine to see the light streaming through the curtains – it just feels glamorous and surreal.”
It even comes with a round spinning bed and chandelier and epitomizes the character of the whole house.
She explains: “Pink is a representation of softness and femininity for me.”
But don’t make the mistake of thinking Jamie is ‘girlie’ because she insists she’s a bit of a tomboy. She even has a ‘guy’s cave’ that houses a truck and two motorcycles.
“I’ve always been a really strong woman.”
Jamie thought that she would be lonely living alone in such a huge house but nothing was farther from the truth.
“I’ve had people here every single day. Even it’s a commercial job, I end up meeting friends and inviting people over to my parties.”
And that’s the most important feature of the house for Jamie, where everyone gets to feel welcome and has fun.
“The most important thing to me is that everyone here feels the positive vibes.”
