This strange ritual happened when Catherine Lucre, a 52-year-old woman from Camden, Sydney, made a shocking discovery of two abandoned babies in one week.
She was walking by the Maroubra Beach when she found a baby’s body buried in the sand. As you could imagine, she was horrified. Later that week, she found another newborn in a drain at Quakers Hill.
As a mother of four, Catherine could not let this from happening again and again.

So, she decided to do the unthinkable – to provide a safe alternative for the mothers who can’t keep their babies.
She named it as “Operation Safe Haven,” and even set up a Facebook Page. She wrote, “I have started this page to hopefully allow women, who would otherwise do harm to their babies, Know that there is a safe place for them. I will come to you if necessary. Please do not feel alone because you are not alone!”
Being a registered nurse, Catherine reassured that she would put the bassinet out at her front door, so that any mothers could come and drop off their babies.

If the mother wants to remain anonymous, Catherine says that she will wait for 10 seconds before opening the door.
And Catherine also promised to immediately take the baby to a hospital and report to the Department of Community Services and police. However, everything about the mother’s identity would be kept confidential.
Although some might say that what Catherine’s doing is making it easier for women to abandon their babies, she says that she just wants to help them out by giving them an option.
“For these women there is no solution, whether it’s that they’re concealing pregnancy or depression’s taken hold of them, they cannot see another way out.

I’m hoping that I can help someone out of that dark place,” said Catherine in the interview with the News.com.au.
