Although everyone has their own favorite band, any list would be incomplete without The Beatles. From a fan favorite boy band to everlasting legacy, the four Brits have enshrined their names in the musical Pantheon.
The Beatles officially broke up on April 10th, 1970. John Lennon has left fans behind for almost 40 years with George Harrison passing away for 20 years. Yet their music and legacy still very much lives on.
For example, one hospital in New York has been putting “Here Comes the Sun” on their PA system every time a patient who survives the coronavirus returns home. Other New Yorkers opened their windows during self-quarantine and sang “Yellow Submarine” with their neighbors.
Even more surprisingly, the Beatles remains a hot commercial commodity. Just last year, a newly remastered “Abbey Road” managed to climb to number 3 on the Billboard charts. It was 49 years after the original album topped the chart.
The secret to their everlasting popularity is hard to pinpoint. The musical genius so obvious in their works are of course one of the more obvious reasons. In the 10 short years they performed as a band, they released 13 albums.
Out of 13, 10 albums have been selected by the Rolling Stone magazine among the top 500 album of all time. In the same list, four of the top 10 musical albums were by the Beatles with Sgt.Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band topping the chart.
The incredible personal story of the members and the bands is another factor.
When the South Korean boyband BTS gained global popularity, especially among young girls, they instantly were compared to the British Invasion led by the Beatles. The Beatles’ performance at the Ed Sullivan theater lives on as a historical moment and benchmark.
Another good example that proves the band’s relevance was the success of the 2019 film “Yesterday”. A film that imagines a parallel universe where only a select few remember the Beatles, the film grossed $150 million worldwide against a $26 million budget.
The message that they so brilliantly told through their music also makes them so endearing, especially in these tough times. Whether it be the positivity in “All You Need is Love” or more mature words of relief in “Let It Be”, just about anyone can find relief in the songs of the Beatles.
