Democrat presidential candidate Bernie Sanders made a suggestion saying that taxpayers should fund abortions in poor countries to combat climate change.
The UN forecasts the population of the Earth will climb from 7.5 to 11 billion by 2100.
Teacher Martha Readyoff said the topic was “poisonous for politicians, but it’s crucial to face.”
She told Sanders: “Human population growth has more than doubled in the last 50 years, the planet cannot sustain this growth.”
Readyoff added: “Empowering women, and educating everyone on the need to curb population growth seems a reasonable campaign to enact.
“Would you be courageous enough to discuss this issue and make it a key feature of a plan to address climate catastrophe.”
Sanders, who is running for the Democratic presidential nomination, replied: “Well, Martha, the answer’s ‘yes.’ Women in the United States of Americas, by the way, have a right to control their own bodies and make reproductive decisions.”
He continued: “And the Mexico City agreement — which denies American aid to those organizations around the world that allow women to have abortions or even get involved in birth control — to me is totally absurd.
“So I think, especially in poor countries around the world where women do not necessarily want to have large numbers of babies and where they can have the opportunity through birth control to control the number of kids they have, it’s something I very strongly support.”
Steve Scalise, a Louisiana Rebulican congressman, took to Twitter and wrote: “During CNN’s #ClimateTownHall, Bernie Sanders said YOUR tax dollars should be used to fund abortions in foreign countries to reduce population size. Are you kidding?? That’s horrifying, and tells you just how little regard radical liberals have for innocent life.”
