How often does a person get to graduate from high school? Obviously, just once in a lifetime and for the same reason, the day should be a festival to celebrate and not a massacre to run away from.
Jack Higgins was a student at Carmel High School, and the entire school knew him. The corridors, hallways, library, and all the places a student should be in, he used to be there.
He had been enrolled in the school’s program for students with cognitive, learning, and behavior challenges for the past 8 years and it was the time for him to graduate.
He has a high level of Autism and loud noise is one thing that triggers him.
He is a sweet boy otherwise and just like all the other parents, his parents Pat and Barbara wanted him to participate in the ceremony so that they can see him on the stage and be even more proud of him. But the only fear they had in mind was “How?”
Controlling other students can be a great deal. They can be stubborn, rebellious, and full of indiscipline at days.
Jack parents went to the principal Lou Riolo, of the school with the same concern. He knew it was important and so he shared his idea with the staff members.
He wanted all the students to stay silent and give Jack golf applauds when he is up on the stage. He was in doubt if the students will support him and the staff members asked him to at least give it a try.
On the day of the ceremony, Jack stood up and started walking towards the stage when his name was announced with his fingers in his years to escape the noise, but to his surprise, there was no noise at all.
Instead, people were applauding for him silently. This was not just a great gift to jack but to his family as well.
