President Biden is feeling the heat following the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan after the US troops were pulled from the country.

While President Biden previously reassured the people that Americans would never have to be airlifted from the US embassy in the country, it appears his words have come back to haunt him after a U.S. Air Force Chinook was used to rescue Americans from the embassy as the Taliban have taken control of the city.

“There’s going to be no circumstance where you’re going to see people being lifted off the roof of a (sic) embassy of the United States from Afghanistan,” Biden said on July 8, 2021.

At the time, Biden also reassured the people that the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan is not inevitable. “You have the Afghan troops at 300,000 – well equipped, as well as any army in the world – and an Air Force, against something like 75,000 Taliban. It is not inevitable [the takeover],” he said.

On Sunday, five weeks after the president’s comment, however, a US Air Force helicopter was used to evacuate people from the embassy in Kabul as the Taliban invaded the city.

Blaming the former president for the current situation on Saturday, Biden wrote:

“When I came to office, I inherited a deal cut by my predecessor—which he invited the Taliban to discuss at Camp David on the eve of 9/11 of 2019—that left the Taliban in the strongest position militarily since 2001 and imposed a May 1, 2021 deadline on US forces.”

He continued: “Shortly before he left office, he also drew US forces down to a bare minimum of 2,500.point 205 |

Therefore, when I became President, I faced a choice—follow through on the deal, with a brief extension to get our forces and our allies’ forces out safely, or ramp up our presence and send more American troops to fight once again in another country’s civil conflict.point 228 |

“Our leadership had instructed our forces to remain at the gates of Kabul, not to enter the city. We are awaiting a peaceful transfer of power,” Suhail Shaheen, a Taliban spokesman, said in an interview with BBC.

The spokesperson also expressed they believe the transfer of power will be complete in a matter of days.
