President Biden appeared to promise major gun law changes as he vowed his administration would not wait for another mass shooting to act.
Urging Congress to initiate a “common sense” firearm law reform, the 46th president suggested he wishes to see assault weapons banned. Biden also called for laws that would make background checks mandatory before all firearm sales.
As the POTUS vowed on the third anniversary of the Parkland high school shooting, his administration “will not wait for the next mass shooting” to challenge the existing gun laws.
“We will take action to end our epidemic of gun violence and make our schools and communities safer,” he said. Biden also called for gun manufacturers “who knowingly put weapons of war on our streets” to have their immunity stripped.
While there have been plenty of calls for stricter gun laws following the deadly school shooting which resulted in 17 fatalities three years ago, legislation approved by the Democrats-controlled House didn’t pass through Republican-majority Senate while Trump was in office.
As House Speaker Nancy Pelosi confirmed, however, the House will now that the situation has changed again be trying to pass new legislation.
“We will enact these and other life-saving bills and deliver the progress that the Parkland community and the American people deserve and demand,” Pelosi revealed in a Sunday statement.
Showing support for major gun law changes, President Biden said that “the time to act is now” and that the administration can no longer wait for another incident involving gun violence to act.
