The 81-year-old comedian Bill Cosby has been sentenced to 3 – 10 years imprisonment in brand new Pennsylvania state prison which will become his new home due to being found guilty of drugging and molesting Andrea Constand, a former women’s basketball administrator, back in 2004.
Despite spending the first week of his sentence in Philadelphia Montgomery County Jail, the actor will be transferred to SCI Phoenix in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, where his medical and security needs will be considered.
The Pennsylvania state prison is a brand new complex with “limited access to water” according to the inmates. Cosby might also find it shocking that the jail has the state’s most strict telephone policy.
Several inmates have also complained of having their belongings stolen or damaged, with one prisoner expressing that “hate crime” is common in the prison.
Cosby’s new home features 3,830 beds and maximum security. There are 1,200 full-time employees responsible for maintaining order and taking care of the $400 million prison.
Amongst the jail’s program offerings, there are also sex offender treatments which Cosby might find useful.
According to the authorities, he will be subjected to solitary confinement if he turns out to be at high risk due to his name or if he poses danger to other inmates.
Otherwise, the 81-year-old is likely to share a two-people cell and will have the ability to exercise and attend counseling and other prison activities.
As Amy Worden, the corrections spokeswoman, said, Cosby will be allowed to bring in a personal gadget for games or music but won’t be allowed access to the internet.
The cell that he will most likely stay in features a storage locker, bunk bed, and a stainless steel sink and toilet. It also has a small chair and desk.
During the sentencing, the prosecutors asked for 5 – 10 years imprisonment due to Cosby showing lack of remorse and capability to commit the same offenses again.
The 81-year-old’s legal team, however, countered saying that he should only be put on house arrest due to being old, weak, and legally blind.
Ultimately, the judge ruled that Cosby is a “sexually violent predator” and sentenced him to 3 – 10 years in prison. He will also have to undergo counseling and will be registered in the sex-offender registry.
