A 26-year-old woman, who was bullied at school for her dark red birthmark, is now empowering others through her body-positivity campaign.
Paige Billiot from Los Angeles, California, has a dark red birthmark on the left side of her face, her neck and ear.
Paige was bullied at her school for her dark red birthmark. She said her school life was really tough due to the bullying. But, not only at her school, but she was also bullied outside of her school too.
Paige told Barcroft TV: “School was tough. There was definitely a lot of bullying. Elementary school predominantly was a big challenge. It was definitely a roller coaster.”
“We all know that kids can be brutal. It was really difficult for me to just have somebody to see me and not just my birthmark.”
“Even outside of school it was a lot of staring, a lot of questions which I still get today from adults – if I got burned if I was in a fight, etc.”
All this definitely affected her when she was growing up but she didn’t give up on life. She says that all that has happened to her has made her a stronger person.
She has now openly accepted her scars and has stopped feeling embarrassed.
She added: “I think if I didn’t have those challenges growing up if I didn’t have to be basically forced to acknowledge my birthmark, I wouldn’t have openly accepted it like I do now.”
Paige has now started an online body-positivity campaign, called the ‘Flawless Affect’, to encourage and empower people like her.
She said: “I wanted to create a platform for something that could be essentially a community of people not even with just birthmarks.”
“Anyone who just thinks they are imperfect and flawed, can come to an Instagram page and just feel really proud to be different.”
Paige is now happier than ever and her campaign is also receiving a positive response from everyone.
She said: “I can see this campaign has already been truly amazing and has been very motivating to keep pushing and to get bigger and better.”
“We want to create a new trend for sure, and we want that trend for people to just be happy in themselves.”
“We need to talk about it as much as possible and raise awareness about birthmarks and literally anything that makes you feel different and makes you feel flawed.”
“Different is the new normal because that’s what is real.”
