The notorious Nazi leader was born on April 20, 1889 in the three-story building pictured in the image above. The building stands in Braunau am Inn, an Austrian city that is close to the German border. Hitler’s father had been working in the small town as a customs officer.

As can be seen in the image above, a small memorial stone stood in front of the building to inform visitors that the notorious Nazi leader was born in this building. Since the end of the Second World War, there has been many debates over how the building should be used.

In November 2019, the Austrian government had announced that it will transform the space into a police station. The government argued that it not only would it be a symbolic establishment for one of the worst criminals in human history, but also prevent Nazi sympathizers from going on a twisted pilgrimage.

After receiving proposals, the government decided this week on the renovation plans. As shown in the image above, the new building will be in harmony with the neighboring buildings while significantly different from the current state as to remove the historic disdain.

While the quiet town of Braunau am Inn absolutely rejects the terrible memories of Hitler, many suggested different ways in which the painful legacy should be dealt with.

For example, then-mayor Johannes Waidbacher told the Austrian press that the townsfolk have already suffered enough with the unwanted, nightmarish stain of being known as Hitler’s birthplace. He suggested that the building be removed completely.

Others have called for the establishment of a community center where young adults from around the globe can gather together to learn about the history in a candid manner.

Furthermore, the issue was further complicated by the fact that the building remained a private property for a long time. The owner rejected to the notion of completely demolishing the building, which is why that option was not viable.

The renovation is set to finish in 2023, and is expected to cost around $5.6 million dollars. Share your thoughts on this story with us in the comments, and be sure to follow us on Facebook for more news like this one.
