A bishop has been condemned after he told his congregation that gay people exist because pregnant women allow buggery or anal sex.
Church of Cyprus bishop Neophytos Masouras said at a primary school that the sexuality is passed on when pregnant women enjoy anal intercourse.
“It happens during the parent’s intercourse or pregnancy,” he said. “It follows an abnormal sexual act between the parents. To be more clear, anal sex.
“[Saint Porphyrios] says that when the woman likes that, a desire is born, and then the desire is passed on to the child.”
The remarks came during a ‘spiritual meetings of dialogue’ this month, said Cypriot LGBTI rights group ACCEPT.
Anyone can go to the conventions and there are adults and children who can freely ask the bishop.
The video was shared on social media and quickly went viral, with Accept LGBTI Cyprus writing: “How are lesbians created?”
One social media user commented: “So, father, if the woman does oral, will the child become a dentist?”
Another wrote: “The problem is not this ignoramus, the tragic problem is that there are thousands who believe him.”
A third said: “The only thing about this explanation is how long it has taken to blame women! How dare he say such an outrageous thing, that we need to find someone to blame for gay people in society. These people dont feel the need to find a reason for misogynists and they do more harm than any gay person.!”
Someone else commented: “I’m sorry but I burst out laughing when I read this. The stupidity of some people never ceases to amaze me.”
