A disturbing footage showing a black man confronted by cops has caused a massive uproar on the internet as soon as it surfaced online.
In the video, Zayd Atkinson was seen being confronted by around five cops while he was picking trash from outside his home in Colorado on Friday morning.
The footage captured from inside his house in Boulder shows the man having an angry conversation with the police.
After the video caused outrage on social media, Boulder police launched an investigation into the matter. They have also put the officer who initially confronted Zayd on administrative leave.
In the start of the video, Zayd can be heard calling one policeman that he has ‘no right’ to detain him.
Meanwhile, the policeman can be heard shouting at Zayd to ‘put down the weapon’, referring to the litter-picker that the black man was holding in his hand.
‘You’re on my property with a gun in your hand, threatening to shoot me, because I’m picking up trash,’ the man says in the video.
‘I don’t have a weapon. This is a bucket. This is a clamp.’
Soon reinforcements arrive and four more cops surround Zayd as his friend shouts at the cops to leave from inside the home.
Zayd, who is a model with Model Management Group (MMG), repeatedly tells the officers that he lives there and that he has no weapon with him.
The situation remains tense for around 15 minutes, after which Zayd is finally able to start a conversation with one officer.
The two of them continue talking for several minutes after which they share a fist-bump and the distressed man returns to his house, as can be seen in the video.
According to Boulder police, the matter is now under investigation.
The Professional Standards Review Panel – which comprises six members of the police department and six community members – will review the findings of the on-going internal investigation.
Based on their findings, the panel would provide recommendations to the police chief about suitable action.
Speaking Tuesday night to the city council, Police Chief Greg Testa said it was an ‘extremely concerning’ incident and promised a full investigation.
‘All aspects of this incident, specifically the actions of the initial officer are being investigated,’ Testa said.
