A 7-year-old Alaskan husky doesn’t let his lack of vision hold him back from doing what he loves.
Indy the sled dog just completed a 100-mile race in Minnesota and he will soon join a 300-mile race!
It was three years ago when he lost sight in one eye, his owner Frank Moe said to MPR News. He then started training the pooch to run in Minnesota alongside Popcorn, another adorable pooch.
Sadly, Indy also lost vision in his second eye. After having to adjust for a year, Indy started running again and this time, he joins recreational races.
Moe, a former state legislator, said: “He’s such a happy-go-lucky dog. We almost turned him into a house pet. But he just wants to run. It’s all he wants to do.”
Indy started taking on longer races and he quickly became as strong as other dogs. Moe also said that the Alaskan husky’s role is called the wheel in dogsled parlance. This means that he runs behind other dogs and in front of the musher.
He recently completed the 100-mile Gunflint Mail Run in Cook County, Moe said to MPR News.
“He was as strong as any of the other dogs,” Moe added. “We just thought, ‘Oh my gosh, Indy’s back!’”
Indy is now getting ready for the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon, a 300-mile race! Moe said that he’s not concerned about the pooch keeping up during this vigorous race.
“As long as he gets some love and attention and some treats at the end,” he expressed, “that’s all he cares about.”
