68-year-old Allen Zderad is a retired chemist whose sight was taken away from him due to an incurable eye illness.

Despite losing his vision forever, however, the man was able to see his wife once more after Mayo Clinic surgeons implanted a groundbreaking chip into his eye.

In the video shared by Mayo Clinic, Allen is seen breaking into tears as he sees his wife, Carmen. While Allen can only register flashes of black and white light rather than seeing a clear image, the new invention holds great potential.

“It was just the most wonderful moment. I turned to where Carmen was sitting and for the first time in 10 years, I could pick out a shape,” the 68-year-old said.

“It’s a bit like radar that I have to decipher and interpret,” he added before explaining it wasn’t hard to find Carmen because “she’s the most beautiful one in the room.”

As the Mayo Clinic surgeons elaborated, the Second Sight chip they implanted in the man’s eye receives light-wave signals from the camera positioned at the bridge of their custom-made eyeglasses, allowing Allen to perceive image despite his damaged retina.

“I can make out an outline of for example a head and shoulder, not facial features, but I can see that someone is there or they are moving. It’s very exciting,” Allen added, claiming he can already recognize different objects such as a knife and a plate.

As it turns out, Allen is the 15th American to regain vision after having the revolutionary chip implanted.

“It’s obviously far from perfect vision, but it’s a great help,” his wife added. “His whole life we have heard – nothing can be done, nothing can be done, it’s all we’ve heard. Until now.”
