One of the BLM co-founders has spoken out about Ma’Khia Bryant And George Floyd’s deaths as she said they would still be alive if it wasn’t for our broken justice system.
According to Patrisse Cullors, who co-founded the Black Lives Matter movement back in 2013, she is ready to “fight” to “get us closer to a place where there are no jails or prisons or surveillance.”
Calling the justice system “broken,” the Black rights activist insisted the likes of George Floyd and Ma’Khia Bryant would still walk among us if only we had abolished the criminal justice system and the police.
“When I heard the guilty verdicts I felt two things. I felt a big overwhelming sense of I hope that makes George Floyd’s family feel better. I hope they feel some justice was given to them,” Cullors expressed.
“I also felt like I am ready to fight for more. I am ready to move us toward abolition. I’m ready to get us closer to a place where there are no jails or prisons or surveillance.”
The BLM co-founder went on to say that Chauvin’s conviction serves as proof that the justice system is broken because we rarely see such a turn of events.
“A guilty cop was convicted of all the charges, was convicted of murder. We don’t see that often. We rarely see this,” she added.
“It’s not a sign that our criminal justice system is working it’s actually a sign that it’s broken, it’s a sign that it’s never worked for us and that we have to move toward abolition.”
In her call to action, Cullors also claimed that “in an abolitionist world we would still have George Floyd.”
