A family was left devastated after their two loyal dogs were allegedly poisoned by an epilepsy drug.
They shared on Facebook how Bonno and Clyde, their poodle-pomeranian crosses, were found poisoned, believing it was caused by a neighborhood dispute.
Bonno finally returned home but sadly, Clyde did not survive.
The incident occurred after the two pooches set out to chase some rabbits. Another neighbor then called Brooke Wallis after hearing the dogs ‘yelping’ from a local property.
They drove to the property and whistled to Bonno and Clyde but they did not run back to their owners like they usually did. Wallis could hear their pets howling in pain.
Wallis wrote on Facebook: “My husband decided to drive up to the culprit’s home to check, they didn’t appear to be home.
“He found our dogs in a holding pen at their home, with their legs tightly bound with baling twine upside down. My husband broke them free and rushed them home.”
She added: “We are absolutely devastated. Our daughters are 14 and 7, and they’ve spent their weekend sobbing and scared that someone could come to our home and hurt our family in this way.”
The vet who treated the dogs, Ben Davidson of Rangiora Vet Center, said the pooches were discovered with nerve injury signs such as being shaky, not being able to control their movement, and collapsing.
“It has been a very up and down case,” he expressed. “Very sad to lose a patient in any instance but it’s pretty heartwarming to know that we’ve got a dog out there that’s making a reasonable recovery and hopefully will eventually make a full recovery.”
The vet added: “We see lots of poisonings but this is a wee bit unusual in that it’s a prescription drug that was the cause of the poisoning, one that’s normally used to treat epilepsy.”
